Kayak Fishing Rod Leash: Episode 1

John “Toast” Oast of Fishyaker.com demonstrates how easy and cheap it is to make your own rod leash for kayak fishing or any other time you may be concerned about losing a pole. All you need is an old cell phone cord, a couple clips and a few zip ties.

  • fishyaker says:

  • mreisma says:

    sweet invention

  • dvanbramer88 says:

if u think that is a fly rod u shouldnt even be watching fishing videos!

I like using carabeeners instead of those clips. And these little metal crimp things instead of zip ties.

  • vbyaker says:

How do the zip ties hold? I can’t imagine they’d hold great… I used crimps, and covered them with shrink wrap tubing I had lying around just to clean them up a bit… and carabeeners work great… they clip right to the reel seat of spinning reels. I appreciate the idea though!

    thank you veddy mucho…

  • ASTROHOTROD says:

    Great Idea.

  • Ibanezuser1991 says:

that is soo ghetto. . . . If a fish has the strength to take your rod than that flimsy thing isnt gonna help.

  • fishyaker says:

Who said it is to stop a fish from taking the rod? It is so you don’t lose it overboard, primarily if you turtle your kayak, or during surf launches… Hense it is not “ghetto.”

  • fshnbrb says:

Wow!!!! That is not very cool. Toast, all of these “How To’s” are excellent stuff. You cover stuff for everyone from a novice to a seasoned veteran. Good job on this. One of my fishing bud’s did this exact thing and they have held up for at least two seasons now.

  • Ibanezuser1991 says:

You might as well buy a rod leash for 10bucks and it will hold up longer and better than this. From what I think id rather spend a few bucks more than to risk losing a pole that can cost hundreds.
This vid shows a cheap and easy way but if you really value your pole that much then you might as well buy a rod leash. . . . not make one that could potentially break.

  • hunzala92 says:

thanks for the vid. ingenious idea and a great way to recycle charging chords!

  • Nugburner420 says:

get stainless steal crimps instead of zip ties. plastic will decay over time…especially in saltwater

  • maniacmayo1 says:

excelent idea i have looking for a way to make my own lanyards and i think i just found it, thanks

  • effumall says:

how do the ss clips hold up vs. brass??

  • nipzilla says:

buy a floating fishing rod designed for kayak fishing at Bass Pro Shop.
they have all sizes and they float.
    no drama.

  • kamakazinick says:

excellent video! I’ve been doing a bit of research into paddle and rod leashes this is very helpful. I like how it clearly shows what to do.
    Cheers

  • Earthmon says:
